December 19, 2017

The Honorable Daniel Coats
Director of National Intelligence
Office of the Director of National Intelligence
Washington, D.C. 20511

Dear Director Coats:

The Office of the Director of National Intelligence has taken many steps since its inception to ensure discriminatory and harassing behavior will not be tolerated.

As Members of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, we write to ask that your office review the concerns outlined in a recent open letter (attached) signed by 223 women in national security that calls upon the Intelligence Community (IC), and other national security communities, to do more to protect, empower, and defend the brave women who serve our nation. The letter requests a comprehensive set of actions to ensure that women can work free from fear and can be confident that their gender will not affect their opportunities.

The IC should be a leader in establishing, and promoting, a workplace culture that respects and includes women as equal peers and colleagues. We therefore request that you review the concerns and recommendations in the letter described above with other senior leaders of the intelligence community. We additionally request that you personally make yourself available for a discussion on this matter with interested members and provide the Committee with a plan of action to ensure that sexual discrimination and harassment in the Intelligence Community will not be tolerated either in policy, or in practice.

Thank you for your immediate attention to this matter.
