Press Releases
Washington—Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) today released data from California’s Department of Health Care Services showing that nearly two-thirds of nursing homes in the state are funded through Medi-Cal. Funding to these facilities could be cut significantly under the Republican health care bill:
Feinstein statement:
“The House Republican health care bill would end the Medicaid program as we’ve known it for more than 50 years by ending the federal government’s equal partnership in the program. It goes much further than repealing the expansion of the program under the Affordable Care Act. This is a key point that everyone must understand.
“Although we haven’t seen the Senate bill because it’s being written by 13 men behind closed doors, news reports indicate that it will include the same devastating cuts to Medicaid.
“The Medicaid program provides health care to the most vulnerable citizens in our society. Three in five nursing home residents in California are covered by Medicaid. One in two people with disabilities in California are covered by Medicaid.
“As data from the state show, nearly two-thirds of nursing homes are supported by Medicaid. Shifting billions of dollars of additional costs for the program onto the state—$24 billion by 2027—could potentially force the state to cut funding that goes to these facilities, in addition to cutting other critical health care services, devastating care for seniors. We will do all we can to defeat this bill.”
