Washington—Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) today issued the following statement in response to President Trump’s infrastructure proposal:
“After waiting for more than a year to see President Trump’s infrastructure proposal, we found out today that it does nothing to help rebuild our crumbling infrastructure.
“The president promised $1.5 trillion, but the plan released today only includes $200 billion in federal funds, and those are taken from existing infrastructure programs. In place of more federal dollars, the president’s plan forces state and local governments to shoulder the rest of the tab.
“Much of the plan focuses on raising new taxes and tolls while weakening environmental protections and climate change programs. Worst of all, the plan does little to address our growing backlog of maintenance and safety repairs.
“This is particularly egregious for California, where many of our bridges, dams, aqueducts and transit systems are desperately in need of maintenance. The president’s plan ignores the commitments we’ve already made, instead steering federal funds to projects that raise new money through mechanisms like taxes or tolls.
“We need real investment to rebuild our nation’s infrastructure, not a plan that allows the federal government to shirk its responsibilities.”
