Washington, D.C. - U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein today issued the following statement in response to news reports that Burmese authorities have sentenced pro-democracy activist Daw Aung San Suu Kyi to 18 months of additional house arrest.

Following is the statement of Senator Feinstein:

“The charges against Daw Aung San Suu Kyi were baseless and without merit, so this is clearly an unjust and arbitrary sentence.  I call on the ruling State Peace and Development Council to release Suu Kyi and all political prisoners immediately and unconditionally.  Suu Kyi’s continued imprisonment by the Burmese regime is an affront to human rights, democracy and the rule of law.”
