Washington—Senator Feinstein (D-Calif.) today called on Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and International Boundary and Water Commission head Jayne Harkins to address sewage and pollution problems in the Tijuana River Valley.
In the recent government funding bill, Senator Feinstein secured language requiring the State Department and the IBWC to report to Congress on efforts to mitigate boundary pollution.
According to report language in the funding bill, the report must include: “A description of steps taken by the IBWC and other relevant federal agencies to implement additional mitigation measures to address increased flows in 2017 and 2018, including feasibility studies for sediment basins in the Tijuana River and tributary washes and the installation of additional trash booms in such river.”
In addition to the report language, Senator Feinstein secured $15 million for EPA’s Border Water Infrastructure Grant Program to prevent sewage from flowing across the U.S.-Mexico border into the United States.
