Washington—Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) today released the following statement on the passing of Helen Chavez, wife of the late Cesar Chavez:
“Helen Chavez was a loving wife and mother and a champion for civil rights and improving the lives of our nation’s farmworkers. She will be missed.
“Helen was Cesar’s devoted partner, and his achievements would not have been possible without her support. She stood by his side on the picket lines and raised their eight children while Cesar traversed the country organizing workers.
“United Farmworkers was founded to address widespread exploitation. Farmworkers toiled long hours for pennies a day. They often worked in unsafe conditions, exposed to toxic pesticides. In my view, Cesar and Helen Chavez led one of the most morally righteous campaigns in the history of this country.
“My thoughts are with Helen’s family today, including her seven surviving children. This country owes her a debt of gratitude.”
