Washington—Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) called on military officials to provide documents related to private housing contracts at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, Travis Air Force Base, Vandenberg Air Force Base and Naval Base San Diego in response to reports of substandard military housing run by private contractors.

According to a recent Reuters investigation, service members and their families have been forced to endure rodent and insect infestations, water leaks, mold blooms and poor construction and maintenance at privately run housing on military bases across the country, including in California.

“Recent public reports have indicated that the private contractors charged with ensuring that our service members and their families have safe housing are failing to do so in some instances,” Senator Feinstein wrote.

Senator Feinstein continued, “The Reuters articles describe military officials unable or unwilling to intervene on behalf of our service members, and private contractors who either blamed service members for the poor state of their housing or otherwise failed to remedy serious health and safety hazards.”
