Washington—Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) today issued the following statement on President Trump’s potential government shutdown:

“President Trump and congressional leaders agreed on a short-term funding bill to keep the government open through February, and the Senate voted unanimously to approve that bill on Wednesday. We expect the president to honor his agreement.

“Instead, he’s now holding major portions of the government hostage unless we meet his last-minute demand for $5 billion for a border wall. Why is this funding necessary? The president still hasn’t spent the $1.3 billion we approved last year, only requested $1.6 billion in his budget this year and has consistently bragged that our borders are now secure under his watch.

“Heading into Christmas, the president’s shutdown would deny hundreds of thousands of federal workers their paychecks and create unnecessary chaos as millions of Americans worry when their government will reopen.

“President Trump boasted last week that he would be solely responsible if the government shutdown. Well, that’s one promise it appears he’ll keep.”
