Washington—Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) today released the following statement after the Senate overwhelmingly approved new sanctions against Russia and North Korea:

“Today’s vote to impose sanctions on Russia sends a strong message that any interference in democratic elections won’t be tolerated. Sanctions targeting Russia’s defense, energy and financial sectors are an appropriate response to their actions during our 2016 election and continued meddling in Ukraine.

“This overwhelming vote clearly shows Congress won’t ignore Russia’s actions and ensures that we, not the president, will have the final say on waiving, modifying or lifting sanctions.

“With respect to North Korea, Kim Jong Un must end his dangerous pursuit of a nuclear weapon or face total economic isolation. The sanctions will limit access to foreign currency and the ability to conduct trade, severely weakening the North Korean economy. It also gives us the ability to work with the United Nations to impose harsh penalties against any foreign entity that violates or helps North Korea circumvent these sanctions.”
