Washington—Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) today released the following statement after a failed assassination attempt against Afghanistan’s Dr. Abdullah Abdullah:
“I have twice met with Afghanistan’s Dr. Abdullah Abdullah, a candidate in this week’s Afghan presidential runoff election, and have found him to be a capable public servant who has worked diligently to advance peace and security in his country. So it was with horror that I learned of the egregious attack against his life that killed 12 and wounded dozens. I extend my condolences to the victims of this horrible attack.
“By attacking Dr. Abdullah, terrorists have attacked the seeds of democracy in Afghanistan. All actors involved in this attack—whether state or non-state actors—must be brought to justice. I hope the United States and other nations will do all they can to ensure this weekend’s election is carried out fairly and in a manner in which democracy prevails.”
