Washington—Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) today released the following statement after the Senate voted to overturn a Treasury Department rule allowing tax-exempt political organizations to hide the names of major donors from the IRS:

“Americans deserve to know who is trying to influence their votes. The Senate today sent a clear message: dark money has no place in our elections.

“By eliminating the requirement for tax-exempt organizations to disclose their donors, the Trump administration is opening the floodgates for foreign money to be funneled through these organizations to illegally influence our elections. This would do irreparable harm to our democracy.

“We can’t allow foreign actors to hide behind tax-exempt status. I’m glad the Senate voted to uphold the law and restore this commonsense requirement. I urge my colleagues in the House to pass this important resolution to keep foreign money out of our elections.”
