Washington—Senate Judiciary Committee Ranking Member Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) today released the following statement in response to Attorney General Sessions’s decision to revisit consent decrees between the Justice Department and law enforcement agencies:
“The Justice Department is poised to roll back recent progress made in reforming local law enforcement agencies. This is the wrong path and will only further strain relationships between communities of color and law enforcement.
“In recent years, the Justice Department has launched a number of investigations into police departments across the country. These investigations have revealed systemic problems and startling civil rights abuses that must be addressed.
“In fact, in many jurisdictions, including Baltimore, police officials strongly support the involvement of the Justice Department in improving their departments.
“The Justice Department has an important role to play in bridging divides between communities of color and law enforcement. Attorney General Sessions should work to advance that goal.”
