Washington—The National Academy of Sciences last week released a report on the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty. In 2009, the Academy was charged with reviewing technical developments related to the U.S. nuclear stockpile and nuclear explosion test monitoring.

Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) released the following statement on the report, titled “The Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty: Technical Issues for the United States:”

“The National Academy study makes it clear that the United States can maintain a safe, secure and reliable nuclear arsenal without resuming testing. This is a critical contribution to what I hope will be a thorough review of the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty.

“As the study makes clear, we have made tremendous strides in sustaining an effective nuclear weapons stockpile and in monitoring and verification of nuclear tests since we last debated this important treaty. I hope my colleagues will give it their prompt attention.”
