Washington—Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) today introduced a resolution commemorating the 85th anniversary of founding of the Daughters of Penelope, an international women’s organization associated with the American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association.

The resolution also recognizes the significant contributions of American citizens of Greek ancestry to the United States.

“For 85 years, the Daughters of Penelope has lifted up women and children around the country and the world,” Feinstein said. “Like many Greek-Americans, they have contributed to our democracy and sought to help those in need. Their outstanding work strengthening families deserves our highest praise and recognition.”

Founded on November 16, 1929, in Feinstein’s home city of San Francisco, Calif., the Daughters of Penelope has grown to 200 chapters worldwide, including 171 active chapters in the United States.

Through community service and volunteerism, the Daughters of Penelope has promoted the ancient Greek ideals of education, philanthropy, civil responsibility as well as family and individual excellence.

In the United States, the Daughters of Penelope chapters and affiliate organizations have sponsored educational scholarships, literacy programs, affordable housing for senior citizens and domestic violence shelters for women and children.
