Washington—Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) today applauded an announcement by the Federal Transit Administration to award LA Metro $100 million for Section 3 of the Purple Line Extension Project.

“I’m pleased the federal government continues to be committed to moving the Purple Line Extension forward,” Senator Feinstein said. “This is critical funding for a long-awaited section that will help reduce traffic times, alleviate congestion and connect commuters from downtown Los Angeles to the Westside. I know LA Metro is eager to complete this extension before the 2028 Olympic Games to showcase our world-class public transportation options.”

“On behalf of Metro, I want to express our sincere gratitude to Senator Feinstein for her strong and sustained leadership in securing federal funding for the Westside Purple Line Extension Project,” said Metro CEO Phillip A. Washington. “Senator Feinstein has been and remains a remarkably effective champion for increasing mobility across Los Angeles County for millions of residents and for that our agency is extremely grateful.”

Background

  • Section 3 is the last section of the Purple Line Extension Project, a new 2.56-mile extension starting from the future Century City/Constellation station to Westwood/UCLA then Westwood/VA Hospital. It is expected to be open for operations in 2026.

  • Feinstein previously wrote to Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao urging the department to end administrative delays and move forward with funding Section 3 and other high priority projects in California in a letter dated April 30, 2018. Feinstein also raised this project at the March 27, 2019 hearing on DOT’s budget request.
