Washington—Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) today released the following statement on a new report from the Center for Budget and Policy Priorities showing that the Senate Republican health care bill would cut Medicaid by $3.4 trillion over 20 years:

“The more we review the Senate Republican health care bill, the more we learn about how it will devastate American families. Today we learned that already-harsh Medicaid cuts will get even worse as the bill ages. They will, in fact, end health care for millions and may result in the closure of hospitals that depend on Medicaid dollars to keep their doors open.

“On top of nearly $800 billion in Medicaid cuts in the first decade, the bill slashes another $2.6 trillion over the second decade. There’s no way Medicaid can absorb $3.4 trillion in cuts over 20 years, a fact that Republicans must understand. This bill would kill Medicaid.

“By slashing care, this bill will put so many lives at risk: children, pregnant women, individuals with disabilities and elderly people in nursing homes. This bill is truly immoral.

“This bill is a backbreaker that would crush states financially. California alone would lose $115 billion annually by 2037, an impossible amount to cover.

“I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again—this is the most indefensible bill I’ve seen in 24 years in the Senate. We’re doing all we can to defeat it.”
