Statement of Senator Dianne Feinstein

On Presidential Disaster Declaration

"Let me thank the President for the Federal disaster declaration.

This fire season has started with a vengeance.  Lightning has ignited blazes up and down the state, stretching our resources to the limit.

Today in fact, more than 1,000 fires are burning, nearly 300,000 acres have been blackened, and at least 284 homes have been damaged or destroyed.  Only approximately 20 percent of the fires have been contained, and firefighters haven't even gotten to some of the blazes.

A federal disaster declaration means that federal resources can be used -- both to fight the fires and to coordinate disaster relief efforts.

This fire season began early.  It is hot, and the State is tinder dry.  This will be a long fire season.

So all resources must be utilized in the effort to bring these fires under control and to begin the recovery and rebuilding process."
