Washington—Senators Dianne Feinstein and Barbara Boxer (both D-Calif.) today released the following statement on efforts to claw back reenlistment bonuses and benefit payments paid to service members nearly a decade ago:
“We welcome Secretary Carter’s decision to suspend efforts to recover reenlistment bonuses paid to members of the California National Guard during the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. However, these steps will only provide temporary relief to service members. A permanent solution remains necessary, particularly if the Pentagon fails to use its existing authority to waive these repayments.
“When Congress returns after the election, we will introduce legislation to hold the Pentagon to its commitments. The small number of service members who knew they weren’t supposed to receive bonuses will be exempt from the bill.
“We’re hopeful the Pentagon will resolve this issue on its own, but want to assure those who wore our nation’s uniform that they won’t be punished for the actions of others.”
