Feinstein Statement on Roe v. Wade Anniversary
Jan 19 2017
Washington—Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) today released the following statement on the 44th anniversary of the Supreme Court’s decision in Roe v. Wade:
“As we mark the 44th anniversary of Roe v. Wade on Sunday, we renew our commitment to protecting a woman’s right to make her own health care decisions. This is particularly important under a new president who has not been supportive of women’s reproductive rights.
“I remember what it was like before Roe v. Wade. I know the measures women went to, often on their own, to make decisions regarding their health and future. I know how dangerous it was and I will not allow us to return to those times.
“It’s important to remember that the Supreme Court last year again reaffirmed that women have the right to make their own health care decisions, without an ‘undue burden’ imposed by the state.
“In Whole Woman’s Health v. Hellerstedt, the court struck down a Texas law that would have closed 75 percent of women’s health clinics that offer abortion services. Under the false pretense of protecting women, the state forced clinics to undergo unnecessary and expensive building renovations and meet medically-unnecessary requirements. The court ruled the law was an unconstitutional undue burden on women’s reproductive rights.”
