Washington—Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) released the following statement on the continued Turkish military action in Syria following President Trump’s decision to fully withdraw U.S. forces from Syria:
“President Trump was warned of the disastrous consequences that withdrawing U.S. troops from Syria would have. He was warned of civilian deaths and the potential for strengthening ISIS.
“Instead of reconsidering and reversing course to save lives, President Trump doubled down and ordered an immediate withdrawal of all 1,000 U.S. troops from Syria.
“Just in the last 24 hours we’ve seen Kurdish civilians executed by Turkish-supported fighters, almost 1,000 ISIS family members escape a holding camp and a growing humanitarian crisis with more than 130,000 civilians displaced according to the United Nations.
“The Kurds have been holding 12,000 ISIS fighters in prison. Now, thousands of these ISIS fighters, including dozens of high-value ISIS detainees that were left behind by withdrawing U.S. troops, could end up back on the battlefield. Today’s escape is just the start of what is to come.
“The Kurds were our best partner in the fight against ISIS. With U.S. support, they liberated millions and reclaimed thousands of square miles from ISIS according to retired General Joseph Votel, the former commander of U.S. Central Command. In the process they sustained nearly 11,000 casualties. Now, President Trump has abandoned them.
“This is the time for a display of U.S. leadership, not the time to walk away. President Trump must listen, he must act and he must stop this bloodshed.”
