Service Academy Nominations - Update Preview

How to . . . Apply for a Service Academy Nomination

Each year, I have the honor of nominating fine young men and women from California for selection to the four service academies that require nominations: the U.S. Air Force Academy, the U.S. Naval Academy, the U.S. Military Academy (West Point), and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.

Because of the large number of qualified candidates, the nomination process is extremely competitive. I encourage all applicants to also apply directly to the academies and ask that a pre-candidate file be opened for them.

To qualify for a Service Academy, applicants must:

  • Be a United States citizen and legal resident of California;
  • Be at least 17 years old, but not older than 23 on July 1 of the year you enter the academy;
  • Have a high school education or the equivalent;
  • Have high academic standing;
  • Participate in extracurricular and/or community activities that demonstrate leadership qualities; and
  • Have received competitive scores on the SAT or ACT.

I accept nomination applications each year between April and October.

The application period is currently closed.

To be considered for a nomination by Senator Feinstein to one of the United States Service Academies, you are required to submit a complete application packet to Senator Feinstein’s office.  The following information must be emailed to AcademyApplications@feinstein.senate.gov NO LATER THAN OCTOBER 1, 2021. Please put your last name comma first name in the subject line.

  1. Completed and signed application form (which can be accessed at the bottom of this page).
  2. Copy of your high school transcript, including courses currently in progress, GPA, and class rank.
  3. Copy of your college transcript (if applicable), including courses currently in progress and GPA.
  4. Two letters of recommendation: one from a counselor or principal and one from a teacher or coach. Please have your recommenders email their letters to AcademyApplications@feinstein.senate.gov directly, with your last name comma first name in the subject line.
  5. A copy of your official SAT or ACT report, if the report is not being sent directly from the SAT or ACT Board. To have scores reported directly to Senator Feinstein’s office, use the following codes:
    • SAT: 4962
    • ACT: 7110
  6. A 500-word essay stating your reasons for seeking this nomination.

If you have not already done so, you need to begin a pre candidate file with each academy to which you plan to apply.  Please note that the material you supply to our office is separate from what you’ll be asked to supply the academies or any other congressional office.

Thank you and good luck!
